Our Ultimate Aftercare Guide for Dental Implants

Find out about the dental implant procedure and our recommended aftercare with Blessing Dental Care. Dental implants can survive as long as natural teeth if they are properly cared for with good oral hygiene. To ensure that you get the most out of your implant and that it heals properly, we’ve compiled the following aftercare tips.

What are dental implants?

The newest fix for missing teeth is dental implants, which serve as a durable tooth replacement option. A dental implant is surgically placed titanium metal rod into the jawbone. One or more crowns are held there in place and are essentially a prosthetic tooth, similar to artificial teeth used in dentures.

What is the dental implant procedure?

Usually done under local anaesthesia, the implant is placed quickly and painlessly. Under the gum line in the jaw bone, the implant will be buried, which will make it invisible to the naked eye. Although you won’t feel any pain during the operations, you can be uncomfortable in the week following the operation. This is normal during the healing phase around the implant.

Immediate dental implant aftercare

After your implant is implanted, you will be able to return home as soon as you are ready. You will need to rest while the anaesthetic wears off, which could take several hours. Most implants are placed under local anaesthesia, but if you receive a general anaesthetic or sedation, you will be unable to drive and will require someone to transport you home.

You should be able to resume your normal activities within a day following treatment. Most people will be able to return to work, but you should avoid activities that are too hard, such as severe exercise.

You may also have some minor bleeding at the implant site, which should subside within the first day or two. This is very normal. You might try biting with slight pressure while holding a damp gauze over your implant. If the bleeding does not stop or worsens, contact our team at Blessing Dental Care, who will be pleased to assist.

Our key recommendations after dental implant surgery

You should:

  • Only eat soft foods for up to seven days after surgery to aid in the healing process.
  • Keep your mouth clean – don’t bite your nails or chew on anything synthetic
  • Rinse your mouth regularly with recommended mouthwash (your dentist will give you a recommendation)
  • Take any medications that you have been prescribed, including painkillers to aid in your healing process.
  • Take over-the-counter pain relief, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, if you need to relieve the pain

You shouldn’t:

  • Avoid eating hot foods or drinks for at least one day after the procedure to prevent irritation at the implant site.
  • Use straws or vapes or e-cigarettes
  • Try and avoid strenuous tasks or exercise
  • Touch your implant or surrounding area with your fingers or tongue
  • Drink alcohol or smoke for at least 14 days after the procedure
  • Wear any dentures that cover the affected area

Longterm post-operative care

Your implant can last a lifetime with proper maintenance. You can clean your implant the same way you would your natural teeth. Here are some key tips:

  • Clean your teeth twice a day for two minutes using a gentle or electric toothbrush.
  • Use interdental brushes or floss on a daily basis. Your dentist may recommend particular cleaning aids developed for cleaning around implants.
  • Avoiding smoking. If you currently smoke, your dentist will encourage you to stop before the operation.
  • Brush the inside, outside, and top of your teeth where you eat.
  • Changing your toothbrush regularly.
  • Making regular appointments with a dental hygienist for a deep cleaning
